Two PhD Scholarship Positions in AI Engineering at Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers University of Technology is offering PhD position in computer science. The initial contract for this position is five years. Candidates are welcome before October 04, 2019.

Information about the department

The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is a joint department at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with activities on two campuses in the city of Gothenburg. The department has around 210 employees from over 30 countries. Our research has a wide span, from theoretical foundations to applied systems development. We provide high quality education at Bachelor’s, Master’s and graduate levels, offering over 120 courses each year. We also have extensive national and international collaborations with academia, industry and society.

This position is funded by the Chalmers AI Research Center and will be located in the Software Engineering division – one of the leading software engineering research groups in the world – in close collaboration with the companies connected to the Software Center (www.software-center.se).

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to developyour own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers’ undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

The research is concerned with developing largely automated solutions that support the creation, training and evaluation of ML/DL components in industrial, production-quality systems. Specifically, as, similar to other software components, ML/DL components deployed in industrial practice are continuously retrained, validated using A/B testing and then deployed once the new model proves superior to the previous version, we aim to study the challenges arising from this continuous process of collecting data, improving and retraining the model, validating the newest version of the model and then monitoring and logging to ensure that the model performs according to expectations and integrates well with the other software components as well as the data pipelines established in the software intensive system. As cyber physical systems typically are instantiated many times, one of the challenges that we intend to study is the combination of data and learnings from many instances of systems that operate in, potentially highly diverse, contexts. This position is concerned with studying these challenges and developing relevant solutions.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Computer Science, Software Engineering or any related field.

The successful applicants should also be able to communicate efficiently in written and spoken English.Chalmers offers Swedish courses. She/heshall have a general interest to learn new topics.
