Research Fellow at University of Michigan

A new postdoctoral scholar position in molecular biology is available at University of Michigan. There is no application deadline for this position.

Michigan Medicine improves the health of patients, populations and communities through excellence in education, patient care, community service, research and technology development, and through leadership activities in Michigan, nationally and internationally. Our mission is guided by our Strategic Principles and has three critical components; patient care, education and research that together enhance our contribution to society.

A postdoctoral fellow position is available for a highly-motivated individual interested in studying the molecular mechanisms underlying energy balance control by the central nervous system. The Olson lab at the University of Michigan Medical School is focused on understanding the neurons and neural circuitry within the central nervous system that regulate feeding, energy balance and metabolism. We combine neuron-specific Cre recombinase expressing transgenic mouse lines with stereotaxic delivery of Cre-inducible viruses to acutely and chronically manipulate subsets of neurons in order to understand their physiologic functions. Active project areas include genetic dissection of the paraventricular hypothalamus, ventromedial hypothalamic regulation of blood glucose and mechanisms of feeding regulation housed in the lateral parabrachial nucleus. We currently have an opening for a post-doctoral fellow interested in the central control of energy balance.

Our group uses state of the art genetic models and stereotaxic delivery of viral vectors to selectively control identifiable cell groups in the brain.

The successful applicant must have experience with handling and phenotyping laboratory animal models and a working knowledge of molecular biology and basic neuroscience principles. Laboratory animal surgery skills are highly desired. The applicant will be expected to work as part of a multi-disciplinary, highly collaborative research team that interacts with other laboratories across the University of Michigan.
