PhD Scholarship Position in Microsystems Technology at Chalmers University of Technology

Chalmers University of Technology is pleased to invite applicants to apply for a new opening PhD position in nanotechnology. The initial contract for this position is five years. Applications should be sent before September 01, 2019.

Information about the division

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience (MC2) focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academy, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with state-of-the-art equipment.

In the Micro- and Nanosystems group of the Electronics Materials and Systems Laboratory we conduct research on the preparation of micro- and nanostructured materials in order to realise devices for a broad range of applications. We are currently engaged with energy harvesting and energy storage for intelligent wireless sensors exploiting nanofibrous materials based on carbon, and we also work with micromachined metamaterials for high frequency electronic systems.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies as a constructive contribution to projects undertaken by the Micro- and Nanosystems group. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. The appointment offers an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry. Included in your work is also to some extent taking part in the supervision and teaching of students.

This particular PhD project is part of an ongoing activity funded by Wallenberg Wood Science Center. It concerns spinning of lignin/cellulose solutions and carbonization with high carbon yield and activation with controlled porosity. Lignin and cellulose precursors need to be characterized in order to find the ones with necessary properties that can be subsequently translated into functional materials. Nanoporous carbon derived from lignin can function as the electrode component in supercapacitors and as adsorbent of toxic substances

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

To qualify as a PhD student, you must be a Master of Science in Engineering with a profile towards materials science. You should have experience in polymer chemistry and materials characterization. You need to be fluent in English and should be able to demonstrate excellent team-working skills as well as a high capacity to carry out advanced experimental work.
