PhD Scholarship in Modeling and Experiment on Polymer-based Chips for Acoustofluidics

A 3-year PhD scholarship, starting October or November 2019, is available in the field of ultrasound acoustofluidics supervised by Prof. Henrik Bruus, at the Department of Physics. We study the fundamental physics of fluids and solid mechanics under external forcing, such as ultrasound, at the micro- and nanometer scale, and we perform numerical simulations of selected systems in international collaborations with various experimental groups. The scholarship "Modeling and experiment on polymer-based chips for acoustofluidics" is part ofthe Innovation Fund Denmark IF-Eurostars-2019 research project "Acoustofluidic blood plasma separation polymer chip for Point-of-Care diagnostics (ACOUPLAST)" involving the industrial partners AcouSort AB (Lund, SE) and Ortofon A/S (Nakskov, DK) and academic partners at Lund University and DTU. ACOUPLAST aims to develop a polymer acoustofluidic chip for high-performing, fast and cost-effective blood plasma separation, to enable healthcare and veterinary Point-of-Care (PoC) diagnostics. One main task of the PhD scholarship is to implement our novel whole-system-resonance principle on microscale acoustofluidic systems,Moiseyenko and Bruus,Phys. Rev. Appl.11, 014014 (2019) 1-14 [ ], for numerical studies and optimization ofdesigns of efficient all-polymer acoustofluidic devices. We use continuum physics modeling to establish the governing equations, and we implement numerical models of the devices in Comsol Multiphysics. The other main task is to perform validation experiments in collaboration with our partners in Lund, and to assist with the fabrication and test of actual acoustofluidic devices.

Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
