PhD Scholarship in Cognitive Science at University of Gothenburg

A new opening PhD position in cognitive science is available at University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for four years in Sweden. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before August 29, 2019.

The University of Gothenburg invites applications for one PhD position in Cognitive Science related to digitalization of society. The position is placed at the Department of Applied Information Technology at the Division of Cognition & Communication. The start of the position is planned for 1st of October 2019, or according to agreement.

Education and research at the Department of Applied Information Technology is oriented towards the digitalization of society. The department offers education and carries out research within the areas of informatics, learning & IT, and communication & cognition in close cooperation with industry and public sector. The department is located at Campus Lindholmen. The department has altogether around 30 PhD students enrolled in the PhD research areas Informatics, IT and learning, and Cognitive science and communication.

The Division is an active environment for research and education in cognitive science and communication. There is a Bachelor program in Cognitive Science an international Master's program in Communication and PhD programs in communication and cognitive science. In both research and education there is a long-standing tradition of collaboration with industry and public organizations.

The subject area of the PhD position is Cognitive Science, with placement at the Division of Cognition & Communication at the Department of Applied Information Technology.

The student will participate in the research activities of ICED Lab, which concerns basic and applied research into interaction, cognition, emotion and decision making. The lab has ongoing research collaborations with different partners.

Admission to a third cycle education is aiming at a PhD exam in the subject area. The education runs for four years of full time studies equivalent to 240 HEC, comprising thesis work, and academic education i.e. course work and literature studies. The third cycle education consists of courses that are examined gradually, and individual research work resulting in a written PhD thesis that demonstrates the advance of scientific knowledge within the field of study. The PhD student will perform the study under supervision by a principal supervisor and one or several co-supervisors aiming at the development of the PhD student's methodology, experience, analytical skills, and theoretical depth and width. Results will be communicated in the form of scientific articles, conference presentations, etc. and a PhD thesis. To obtain a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, doctoral candidates must have written and verbally defended a doctoral thesis that has been passed at a public defence (disputation), and he or she must also have passed the courses and examinations that are included in the study plan.

To be eligible to apply for education on PhD level both general and specific entry requirements shall be fulfilled.

The capability of assimilating a doctoral education is crucial and the applicant will prove this by documented knowledge within the subject area Cognitive Science, and knowledge in scholarly scientific practices.

Except the entry requirements we regard experience in scientific collaboration as a merit. We encourage applications from candidates with a main focus in either Human-Technology Interaction or in Human-Human Interaction in both cases with a willingness to connect to cognitive theories and computational modelling / quantitative analysis, e.g., machine learning based modelling, emotion expression analysis or interactive dynamics.

Only the one who has been admitted to doctoral studies can be employed as a PhD student.

Regulations regarding employment as a PhD student can be found in the ordinance SFS 1993:100. The first employment as a PhD student may have a length of maximum one year. The employment may be prolonged of maximum two years a time. A person may be employed as a PhD student for a maximum of eight years in total. The total time of employment may not exceed what is equivalent to four years of doctoral studies at postgraduate level on full time.

A person employed as a PhD student is supposed to mainly engage in doctoral studies. A PhD student are though allowed, at a limited scope, to work with teaching, research and administration. Such work cannot, before a Degree of Doctor of Philosophy has been obtained, exceed 20 percent of full time.

The university applies the local agreement on salary for PhD students.

The placement of the admitted and employed PhD student will be at The Department of Applied Information Technology.

The scope of the employment of PhD students isfull time / 100%. Planned start date is October 1st 2019 or according to agreement.
