PhD Scholarship in Clinical Radiation Dosimetry at Technical University of Denmark

The Radiation Physics Division, DTU Nutech, is seeking a candidate for a PhD position to develop geometrical safety concepts suitable for high precision cancer treatment with on-line MR-guided radiotherapy. The work will be carried out in close collaboration with the University Hospitals in Copenhagen and Herlev who have recently acquired state-of-the-art ViewRay MR accelerators. The position is conditional on additional external funding.

The Radiation Physics Division carries out research, innovation and research-based consultancy in the fields of dosimetry, luminescence physics, and neutronics, with applications in geological and archaeological dating, radiation therapy and diagnostics, radiation processing, reactor physics and nuclear emergency preparedness. The division presently consists of approx. 40 people including researchers, technicians and PhD students. Radiotherapy with online magnetic resonance (MR) image guidance has recently become commercially available and the clinical implementation is in progress worldwide. The ability to continuously image the irradiated volume while treating the patient requires a new paradigm for treatment planning and dose delivery. The overall objective of this PhD therefore is (i) to define and evaluate the geometric uncertainties in online MR guided radiotherapy, and (ii) to develop quantitative decision support tools to define the treated volume such that this novel technology can be used to its full potential by offering an optimal trade-off between target exposure and normal tissue exposure for the individual patient. The end goal is a new set of guidelines for treatment planning not based on static margins and planned target volume (PTV) as used in conventional radiotherapy. The PhD student will simulate 4D MR motion patterns derived from treated patients with the aim to evaluate dose accumulation for a range of treatment scenarios using different MR-linac gating and tracking procedures. Both geometrically simple targets (e.g. localized prostate) and more complex geometries (e.g. pancreas- and lung tumours) will be used for several patients and sites. The relationship between target coverage and normal tissue exposure will be investigated using Pareto front analysis or similar techniques. The work will primarily be carried out in the clinical environment of the Copenhagen University Hospitals at Herlev and Copenhagen. The candidate should have a master’s degree or an equivalent degree in engineering, physics, or medical physics with an interest in radiotherapy, imaging, radiation physics, and medical applications of ionizing radiation. The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. The candidate should be able to start in 2019. The formal place of work is DTU Nutech at Ris campus in Roskilde, but the majority of the work will be carried out at Herlev Hospital and Rigshospitalet.
