PhD in Vision Sciences Investigating The Causes and Establishing Better Measures of Visual Performance in Infantile Nystagmus

International students are invited for a PhD scholarship in optometry at Cardiff University. The deadline for applying is August 31, 2019.

Associated with numerous disorders, the cause of infantile nystagmus (IN) remains unknown. A recent model purports to explain the genesis of IN under the assumption that smooth pursuit eye movements are normal in this condition and cortical control of the optokinetic response has been disrupted. Using neuroimaging (fMRI), we will test this hypothesis to determine whether such a neural dysfunction underlies the onset of nystagmus. We will also evaluate two novel methodologies for assessing the impact of treatments for IN.

Applications are invited for a 3-year PhD studentship in eye tracking, psychophysics and fMRI at the School of Optometry and Vision Sciences, in partnership with our collaborators in the Cardiff University Brain Research Imaging Centre (CUBRIC) .

Applicants must have at least a BSc 2.1 Hons degree (or equivalent) in Optometry and be a Member/Fellow of the College of Optometrists (MCOptom/FCOptom) by the start date and for the duration of the PhD.

Consideration is automatic upon application for admission to theDoctor of Philosophy in Vision Sciences with a January 2020 start date.

A CV, personal statement, and cover letter must be uploaded as part of your application.

In the “Research proposal and Funding” section of your online application, please specify the project title and supervisors of this project and copy the project description in the text box provided.

Please select "No, I am not self-funding my research" when asked whether you are self-funding your research.

Please add 'PhD in Vision Sciences: Investigating the causes and establishing better measures of visual performance in Infantile Nystagmus' when asked “Please provide the name of the funding you are applying for”.

We reserve the right to close applications early should sufficient applications be received.
