PhD in Development of Experimentally Validated Numerical Tools for Evaluation of The Response of Masonry Structures Against Flood.

The main aim of this project is to develop experimentally validated numerical modeling strategies for evaluating the safety of masonry structures against floods.

With the increasing risk of floods in several countries around the world, it is critical to evaluate the safety of existing structures against this hazard. Masonry structures are particularly vulnerable to tensile and out-of-plane loads and therefore are expected to undergo a severe damage under flood loads. However, the literature on this subject is still limited and there is little fundamental knowledge on the actual forces induced by floods and the performance of masonry against these forces. The aim of this project is to evaluate this vulnerability through combined experimental testing and computational modeling. The results will be used for development of vulnerability analysis and design guidelines for protection of existing masonry structures against floods.

The PhD position is available from 1 December 2019 (earlier start dates will be considered). The studentship covers both tuition fees and a tax-free student stipend at RCUK rates (15,009 per annum) for 2019/20 academic year. Duration is 3 years.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated person with good interpersonal skills and a keen interest in research.You must have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honors degree or a distinction or high merit at MSc level (or international equivalent) in Civil Engineering, Materials science, mathematics or a related subject. Preference will be given to candidates with educational and/or research experience in engineering and materials science. Experience in object-oriented programming (especially with Python or Fortran) would be an advantage, but not essential. The candidate will be expected to have good interpersonal skills.
