Research Fellow at University of Michigan

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral scholar position in mechanical engineering to join University of Michigan. Applications will be evaluated on a continuous basis.

Candidates interested in a Postdoctoral Research Fellow position should submit a single PDF file including their C.V., the names and contact information for three references, and a cover letter describing their research interests and qualifications. Applications should be sent via e-mail to James B. Grotberg at

A Postdoctoral Research Fellow position is open in the Biofluid Mechanics Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan under the guidance of Dr. James B. Grotberg, PhD, MD. It is supported by an NIH project focused on liquid plug flows in the lung airway tree. Liquid plug propagation, splitting at airway bifurcations, and plug rupture will be primary objectives to understand fluid stresses on the airway walls. The project includes collaborations with microfluidic and animal experimentalists.

The postdoctoral research fellow will be responsible for research, preparing manuscripts for publication, presenting at conferences, and interacting with collaborators.

PhD degree in biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, aerospace engineering, or in a related engineering field, is required.

Strong and demonstrated experiences in computational fluid dynamics research using non-commercial software and programming skill in a language such as C/C++, FORTRAN and Python are desired. Experience with classic discretization methods, such as finite-difference and finite-volume method is expected. Experience in direct simulation of multiphase flows and fluid-structure interactions using front-tracking, VOF, level-set and/or IBM is highly desirable. Experience with simulation of non-Newtonian fluids is a plus as is experience in large-scale parallel simulations and high-performance computing.
