The Faculty of Information Technology is building a new world-leading team on society-oriented software design under the direct leadership of the Faculty Dean, Professor Jon Whittle, carrying out ground-breaking research in Operationalizing Human Values in Software (OVIS). OVIS is a new paradigm of software engineering, which aims to develop tools, methods and techniques so that organizational, societal and individual values (e.g. social good, trust, fairness, inclusion, sustainability and so on) can be ‘designed in’ to software systems.

Society-oriented software design is a new paradigm for ensuring that as software is designed and developed, proper consideration is given to its impact on society and how it reflects the values of key stakeholders. This new research team will take a case study approach in shadowing large software system projects with a societal impact, will develop new software tools and techniques for embedding values and ethics in software design, and will evaluate these techniques on real-world case studies.

Hear it from the Dean himself!

We are looking for curious, qualified candidates who want to join this world-class team. Applicants should be interdisciplinary researchers with a grounding in software engineering research and capable of publishing at the very best software engineering conferences and journals. Applicants both from a technical background as well as from a socio-technical background are encouraged to apply.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning experience is highly regarded but not mandatory.

If you are enthusiastic at the prospect of taking on a ground-breaking challenge, we strongly encourage you to apply!
