Postdoctoral Position in Propulsion Installation and Electrification

Applications are invited for a postdoc position in mechanical engineering to join Chalmers University of Technology. The initial contract for this position is two years. All candidates regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply before August 15, 2019.

The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. M2 holds one of Sweden's most extensive simulator centres for navigation and propulsion of ships, as well as world class laboratories within combustion engineering and wind tunnels. The department also offers and contributes to bachelor and master programs in areas such as Shipping, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, to mention a few. In addition, professional education is performed on both a national and international level, with specifically designed mission training for different societal actors within our ambition for lifelong learning. The department continuously strives to establish a cooperation between academia, industry, and society, with a great focus on utilization of our research results. M2 is characterized by an international environment with employees and students from around the world, as well as outstanding research and world class education. M2 consists of seven different divisions within the areas of engineering and maritime sciences, and one division of administration and support.

Information about the division andthe research

The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences has a multidisciplinary research portfolio, exhibiting strong theoretical and experimental skills within seven research divisions in mechanical engineering and maritime sciences. We are able to implement unique combinations of physical and theoretical modelling, using in-house competitive research facilities and through access to our partners' infrastructures. For instance, our commitment to the Chalmers wind tunnel lab infrastructure which is closely connected to the research group involved in this Ph.D. project. Our tools include both computations and experiments. The research covers a wide range of topics. In some research projects the smallest turbulent scales are studied whereas in others the function of a complete gas turbine is analyzed and modelled.

Advancing the area in systems analysis, with a particular emphasis on propulsion installation and electrification is an important contribution to the research group. Key involvement in the research group will also be to better link to aircraft mission and conceptual design codes. This will be done partly with existing tools, but also partly developing new platforms.

On the propulsion installation side, we see a need to develop analysing the installed performance when air vehicle boundary layer flows are ingested into the engine. This is done by better understanding fluid flow impact on turbomachines (experimentally and computationally) as well as by better predicing the system level benefits of propulsion installation. This includes weight modelling, conceptual aerodynamics of intakes, nacelle flows and to some extent aircraft aerodynamics and operation.

Turboelectric propulsion installation is a relatively recent effort to improve overall propulsion performance and reduce aircraft CO2 emissions and cost. Here, involvement in the EU Horizon 2020 project centreline will be a key effort. For aircraft propulsion analysis efforts will also target the Horizon 2020 project ENABLEH2. In both projects Chalmers has an important role relating to the topics of this post doc position.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibility as postdoc is to develop software and analysis models for propulsion installation and electrification. The position also includes develop this areas relationto teaching efforts and collaborating with on-going Ph.D. projects. Another important aspect involves collaboration within academia and with society at large. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

The position is full-time temporary employment. It is limited to a maximum of two years, starting with a one-year employment, followed by an evaluation, if the work is proceeding sufficiently well the employment will be extended for a second year.

Qualifications

To qualify as a candidate for this postdoctoral researcher position, you should have a Ph.D. degree in aerospace area, preferably with a focus on propulsion. System analysis understanding, preferably with a background also in CFD. Good written and verbal English communication skills are essential. We are looking for a motivated and independent researcher with good analytical skills, who likes to explore and learn new things.Advanced courses in propulsion and previous teaching experience in the area are beneficial. Even experience in project management and working in EU-projects with interdisciplinary cooperation, as well as skills in optimization are meritorious.
