PhD Scholarship Position in Power Amplifier and Antenna Co-design Strategy for Optimised Efficiency

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden has an opening PhD position in wireless communication. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for 3 years in Sweden. Candidates are welcome before September 01, 2019.

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. Information about the research

The European Innovative Training Network 'MyWave' on Efficient Millimetre – Wave Communications for beyond – 5G wireless communications offers 15 prestigious, fully funded PhD student positions in the area of millimetre-wave antennas, integrated circuits and signal processing, starting in the autumn of 2019. The MyWave consortium consists of 8 leading European R&D laboratories from universities, industries, and technology institutes in the domain of wireless infrastructure, located in The Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium and Germany.

Our society is on the brink of a new age with the development of new visionary concepts such as internet of things, smart cities, autonomous driving and smart industries. This stimulates the use of the mm-wave frequencies up to 100 GHz to support much higher data rates and to increase the capacity of mobile wireless communication systems to enable future beyond-5G infrastructure. This requires new system concepts such as Distributed Massive Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (DM-MIMO) in which instead of a single base-station, the cell is covered by multiple remote antenna stations, all connected to a central unit. To overcome existing limitations, such as poor power efficiency and poor signal quality, MyWave will focus on an innovative antenna system concept utilizing both silicon and III-V semiconductor technologies, advanced signal processing concepts and radio-over-fibre interconnect between a central unit and the remote antenna stations.

MyWave establishes a unique and well-structured training network with leading R&D labs from European industries, universities and technology institutes in the domain of wireless infrastructure and a proven track-record in joint collaborations. The 15 Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) will form a research team that is embedded in leading industrial and academic R&D labs. This will bridge the gap between the various disciplines by uniting their research efforts to solve the challenges.

This highly innovative training will provide the PhD students with a comprehensive set of theoretical and practical skills relevant for innovation and long-term employability in the rapidly growing sector of beyond-5G applications. Examples of specialized and unique cources/workshops that will be offered to the 15 ESRs are ‘Mm-wave antenna technologies ‘, ‘Distributed Massive MIMO systems’, ‘mm-wave measurement techniques’, ‘IC, packaging and PCB technologies ‘, ‘Multi-physics design of integrated antennas’, ‘Advanced mm-wave IC design’, and ‘Massive array signal processing’.

Each PhD student will be enrolled in a fully financed doctoral programme at the host University and is jointly supervised by supervisors from the academic and industry sector. As part of the PhD studies, each student will do a secondment (i.e. training) of 18 months abroad at one of the industrial partners.

Major responsibilities

In this PhD position you will investigate energy efficient and high performance silicon IC power amplifiers for use in mm-wave active antenna arrays for beyond-5G communication systems.

The impedance of an antenna element inside an active antenna array varies significantly over the scan range of a single beam. When considering distributed massive systems, several simultaneous beams will be generated, which will affect the antenna impedance even further. As the efficiency of a PA depends heavily on the connected load impedance, our goal is to investigate PA design strategies for optimised energy efficiency under changing load conditions and linearity constraints. We will also explore wideband PA-antenna co-design strategies where the antenna could simultaneously perform power combining and back-off efficiency enhancement. This is complemented with analogue and digital linearization techniques as needed to meet the spectrum and linearity.

The position is hosted by the Microwave Electronics Laboratory at Chalmers, but it also involves a close collaboration with antenna system researchers at Chalmers, and the PA research team at NXP in the Netherlands where you will spend your industrial secondment as an integral part of your Chalmers PhD studies. You will thereby have access to state-of-the art silicon IC technology, world-class measurement infrastructure, and antenna design expertise as needed to carry out this exciting and challenging research project.

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers’ undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years.


Applicants should have, or expect to soon receive, a Master of Science degree or equivalent in a relevant electrical engineering or applied physics discipline. In addition to the formal qualifications, selection is also based on the performance of the candidates in other works (e.g. thesis and advanced level courses), as well as through interviews and assignments. Besides good subject knowledge, emphasis will be on creative thinking, motivation, ability to cooperate, initiative to work independently and personal suitability for research training. Previous experience in the area of active circuit design, antennas and signal processing as well as proficiency in using scientific and engineering software packages such as ADS, Cadence, HFSS/CST, Matlab etc. are meritorious. According to EU regulations in this program, a candidate student who has stayed in Sweden for more than 12 months in the last 3 years cannot apply to the PhD positions at Chalmers.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
