PhD Scholarship in Medical Science Children's Hearing and Health at Preschools

Applications are invited for a PhD position in medical sciences to join University of Gothenburg, Sweden. The funding allows successful candidate to work for four years. Applicants should apply before August 14, 2019.

Doctoral student in Medical Science – Children’s hearing and health at preschools

Project titel: The impact of early exposure to high sound levels at preschool on children's hearing and health

Third-cycle studies are equivalent to four year full-time and lead to a Degree of Doctor. Those appointed to doctoral studentships shall primarily devote themselves to their studies. Those appointed to doctoral studentships may, however, work to a limited extent with educational tasks, research and administration. Before a PhD degree has been awarded, duties of this kind may not comprise more than 20 per cent of a full-time post.

The PhD educationin Medical Science comprisecarrying out a scientific project and completing at least 30 credits of courses at third-cycle level. The doctoral student must also write a scientific compilation thesis or monograph corresponding to at least 120 credits. For more information about third-cycle studies at Sahlgrenska Academy, see https://medarbetarportalen.gu.se/sahlgrenskaakademin/forskarutbildning/languageId=100001

Project: There is a great need to increase the knowledge on how children's hearing, learning and health are affected by daily exposure to high sound levels and sudden sounds. Preschool children spend a majority of their awake time in indoor environments with very high sound levels and intermittent sounds. In addition, sounds reaching a child's eardrum are not comparable to an adult's, as the high frequencies are amplified differently by the torso, head, pinna and ear canal. Studies on children's perception and behavior support a sensitivity for high frequency sounds and studies of otoacoustic emissions indicative of hearing damage have further highlighted a risk. The intermittent sound characteristics and screams in preschool may contribute to an increased risk for hearing disorders, recently observed in a large cohort study among preschool personnel.

The project is financed by Forte and through knowledge from a parallel project (financed by Formas), we will obtain increased knowledge on how children's hearing and health is affected by the sound environments in preschools Detailed sound measurements from 33 preschools will in a cross- sectional study be related to measurements of around 330 children's perception (validated questionnaire) and impact on hearing (repeated measures over the day and week of otoacoustic emissions). The aim is improved acoustic quality criteria that reduce the sound levels, reduce the discomforting sounds and reduce the risk for hearing disorders for children and adults.

To be eligible for third-cycle studies, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

for third-cycle studiesif he or she:

1. has been awarded a second-cycle qualification 2. has satisfied the requirements for courses comprising at least 240 credits of which at least 60 credits were awarded in the second-cycle, or 3. has acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way in Sweden or abroad for third-cycle studiesin Medical Science if he or she: has successfully completed the English B/6 course or is considered to have acquired equivalent knowledge through previous studies

In selecting between applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements, their ability to benefit from third-cycle studies shall be taken into account. The assessment shall attach particular importance to documented qualifications for:

– specific knowledge and skills within the subject area and related research fields – experience of scientific theory and relevant research methodology – scientific analysis and presentation verified through thesis, degree project, scientific journals or the like. Documentedknowledge in audiology or speech therapy is of value,as well as work within sound environment and acoustics. Knowledge of child development within hearing and cognition, specifically within how hearing, voice and language are affected by high sound levels is desirable.Experience of epidemiology and questionnaire surveys, andknowledge of any of the statistic programs such as SPSS, SAS or STATA will be advanatgeous. Excellent skills in oral and written Swedish and English. Personal qualities such as the ability to work individually and within a team, attention to detail, precision and initiative-taking behavior are desirable.

After admission tothird-cyclestudies you will be appointedtodoctoral studentship. Regulations for employment of doctoral students are given in SFS 1993:100. The initial appointment may apply for no longer than one year. An appointment may be renewed for no more than two years at a time. A person may beappointed to a doctoral studentship for a total ofeight years. The total employment period may, however, not exceed the time corresponding to full-time third-cycle study for four years.
