PhD Scholarship in Kinetics of Scale Formation at Technical University of Denmark

The Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Center for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE), invites applicants for a PhD position in Kinetics of Scale Formation.

CERE is Denmark's leading research center in the areas of EOR, flow assurance, CCS and petroleum geoscience. CERE is an independent, university based, research unit with more than 30 years of expertise in the field. The CERE co-workers are a mix of internationally renowned scientists and the sharpest young talents from different scientific communities around the world.

Scale formation in industrial production equipment poses a general challenge. It tends to build up on pipe walls and can cause a failure of safety valves or a complete stop of production due to loss of internal diameter of the pipe from excessive scale formation. Scales may also cause under deposit corrosion and there is a great need to understand how fast the scales are formed.

The scales in focus during this study are CaCO and FeCO . The aim of this study is to determine scale formation kinetics. Existing equipment and methods need to be further developed.

The knowledge generated in this project is to be used for model development giving the possibility to better predict scale formation in the future. The objective is to reduce the cost of down time by developing methods to predict the rate of scale formation in production equipment.

An experimental method and an analytic chemical technique to determine the rate of scale formation should be developed. Measurements should be conducted under conditions allowing the determination of the rate of scale formation under varying conditions such as The rate of scale deposition on surfaces and the rate of scale formation in the bulk brine should be determined separately. Advanced thermodynamic models are available for support. Existing knowledge on scale formation kinetics from literature is analysed and refined for use in the project. You will be a member of the CERE research group supervised by associate professors Philip Fosbl and Kaj Thomsen, DTU Chemical Engineering. In the CERE research group, you can draw on years of thermodynamic experience and knowledge of scale formation. You will have the chance to visit external research institutions to gain knowledge on the topic.

Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.Master’s degree inanalytical or physical chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental sciences, or similar is required.
