2 PhD Scholarship Positions in Superconductor-semiconductor Hybrid Nanodevices

A fully-funded PhD fellowship in nanotechnology is available at Chalmers University of Technology. The funds for this position are available for five years. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before August 05, 2019.

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipment.

Information about the project

The group of Attila Geresdi, where the project is embedded in, will work on hybrid quantum electronics, and will harness the combination of semiconductors and superconductors to build and measure novel device architectures. The PI will start in September, 2019, and the first PhD students and postdocs are expected to join in the fall semester of 2019.

Major responsibilities

As a PhD student, the focus of your work will be nanofabrication and quantum transport experiments in low-dimensional hybrid nanodevices, to build devices for quantum information processing with Andreev and Majorana bound states. During the project, you will develop your scientific understanding, experimental skills and means to communicate your own results, both verbally and in writing. You will also interact and exchange ideas with external academic collaborators, and will present your results in international conferences. The program is funded by an ERC Starting Grant, entitled Simulated Majorana states (SiMS).

Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers’ undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding up to 20 per cent of working hours.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master’s level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant scientific discipline. You should have a good understanding of solid state physics, mesoscopic physics and superconductivity. You should be a motivated experimental researcher. Programming experience in Python and instrumentation control experience (e.g. QCoDes) are benefitial. Prior nanofabrication experience in a clean room environment is a plus.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
