Research Professor or Senior Researcher in Hydro and Aerodynamics

Chalmers University of Technology is delighted to offer a professor position in mechanical engineering. The funds for this fellowship are available for four years. This position is closed on September 30, 2019.

The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. M2 holds one of Sweden's most extensive simulator centres for navigation and propulsion of ships, as well as world class laboratories within combustion engineering and wind tunnels. The department also offers and contributes to bachelor and master programs in areas such as Shipping, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering, to mention a few. In addition, professional education is performed on both a national and international level, with specifically designed mission training for different societal actors within our ambition for lifelong learning. The department continuously strives to establish a cooperation between academia, industry, and society, with a great focus on utilization of our research results. M2 is characterized by an international environment with employees and students from around the world, as well as outstanding research and world class education. M2 consists of seven different divisions within the areas of engineering and maritime sciences, and one division of administration and support.

Information about the research

At Chalmers University of Technology, many researchers and students are combining passion for sports with expertise in science and engineering. Using our state-of-the-art research facilities, we work closely together with athletes, coaches, governing bodies and industry to find solutions to challenges throughout a whole range of sports - a dynamic meeting place for scientists and the general public. We have more than 90 collaboration partners in academia, industry and public organizations. Established in 2012, Sports and Technology at Chalmers is a multi-disciplinary initiative where Sailing is one of the appointed research areas. Chalmers possesses world-class expertise in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and test facilities highly suitable for sailing sports applications. In collaboration with maritime knowledge-based company SSPA, we conduct advanced computer simulations and full-scale testing that provide unique results, pushing Swedish sailing forward. Chalmers Foundation has recently granted a 5-year strategic initiative where sailing-related research and education activities at Chalmers will be strengthened.

Research Professor or Senior Researcher in Hydro- and Aerodynamics

The position in Hydro- and Aerodynamics will be part of the division of Marine Technology at M2. The division carries out fundamental and applied research for enabling the development and improvement of marine technology. We make propellers last longer and be quieter, we reduce the drag and improve the seakeeping properties of hulls, we design structures that perform better in collisions and require lower maintenance, we do all this and much more. All our activities are best presented through our core application areas: renewable energy, energy efficiency, structural integrity, hydrodynamics, ship design, safety and reliability, propulsion systems, wave dynamics, and numerical methods. The division is part of the Chalmers initiative Sports and Technology and is also leading the Chalmers Yacht Research Unit. Marine Technology is also hosting the Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre in Computational Hydrodynamics.

We wish the new research professor or senior researcher to further strengthen the research (and education) in hydro- and aerodynamics, especially within computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and fluid-structure-interaction (FSI) methods-based research. The main application area shall be (but not limited to) sailing applied to yacht racing as well as sail-assisted ships. Future research areas for this position could also be energy efficiency and marine renewable energy.

Major responsibilities

A research professor at Chalmers University of Technology is primarily expected to perform world-class research, supervise, support and advance higher academic education, to be an active and committed member of the international scientific community, and to exhibit academic leadership. Teaching in courses on our undergraduate education programs may be possible if the successful candidate has a well-documented pedagogical portfolio.

A senior researcher has in principle the same areas of responsibilities and expectations to perform research and be an active and committed member of the international scientific community. There are less expectations on the holder of the position with regards to supervision, support and advancing higher academic education. Like for the research professor, teaching in courses on our undergraduate education programs may be possible if the successful candidate has a well-documented pedagogical portfolio.

The position as research professor or senior researcher is normally funded by external research funds, but full funding is guaranteed for the current position for the first four years of the employment. One important responsibility is to continuously apply for own research funding, and also for funding of postdocs and doctoral students that the successful candidate will form a research team with.

Full-time permanent employment.

The scientific qualifications of a research professor must be very highly rated by external experts, and be among the best internationally in the specific scientific field. You must have the ability to assume a leading role for research in your field. You have good leadership and cooperation skills. Since your own research and that of PhD students is primarily funded by external sources, we assume you can successfully apply for external funding.

To qualify as a senior researcher, it is important that you can demonstrate independent research of high international quality in the specific scientific field. You must have several years of research experience after your PhD degree was obtained. Proof of ability to assume a leading role for research in your field is meritorious. You have good leadership and cooperation skills. Since your own research is primarily funded by external sources, we assume you can successfully apply for external funding.

Applicants must have a doctoral degree, preferably in naval architecture, ocean engineering, marine engineering, fluid dynamics or similar. Experience in leading a research group, and success in attracting research funding will be considered as great advantages. The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their excellence in research, academic leadership and activity in scientific community.Documented pedagogical portfolio will be considered meritorious.

- Documented experience and achievements as active and committed member of the international scientific community, e.g. member of international committees and editorial board member of scientific journals.

- Awards and achievements from distinguished journals, international institutions or organisations within the research subject area.
