Postdoc Position Bioinformatician at Imperial College London

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship position in medical sciences to join Imperial College London. The funds for this position are available for two years. Potential candidates should apply before July 14, 2019.

This is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic and experienced bioinformatician with skills and knowledge in data analysis and statistical genetics to contribute to a cutting-edge new project integrating imaging and genetics to investigate fundamental determinants of cardiovascular form and function in health and disease.

Our research team spans the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London, the Cardiovascular Research Centre at Royal Brompton Hospital and the MRC London Institute of Medical Sciences (LMS). The group's research is aimed at understanding the genetic basis of cardiovascular disease, and particularly inherited heart muscle diseases. Principal Investigators in the team include James Ware, Declan O'Regan Paul Barton, and Stuart Cook. The post-holder will work under the supervision of Dr James Ware and will be embedded in a well-established bioinformatics team. Further information on some of the group's relevant work can be found at and

As a team, we collaborate across a vast global network of researchers in the fields of genomics and cardiovascular disease research. As a member of our team, you will have the opportunity to interact with these networks and have your contributions used and recognised by the wider research community.

You will be responsible for leading computational analyses to understand the genetic basis of cardiovascular disease. You will be working at the intersection of functional genetics and genomics, imaging science, and machine learning, analysing large scale genetic and imaging data from the UK biobank alongside data collected from well characterized local cohorts of individuals with inherited heart muscle diseases and healthy controls. In addition, you will have the opportunity to contribute to other collaborative research projects within the group.

You will need to hold a PhD and have prior experience in bioinformatics and statistical data analysis. Ideally, you will have experience analysing high-throughput sequencing data and knowledge of human cardiovascular genetics. You will be comfortable writing code in R/Perl/Python, and have experience working in a high-performance computing environment, and ideally will have experience with Hail and Plink. You will have the ability to work independently and have experience of independent project leadership. You will also be able to adapt quickly as part of a cross-disciplinary team in a rapidly changing environment.

Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range 34,397- 37,486 per annum

This post is full-time, fixed-term for up to two years and based at the Hammersmith Hospital Campus.

The College is a proud signatory to the San-Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which means that in hiring and promotion decisions, we evaluate applicants on the quality of their work, not the journal impact factor where it is published. For more information, see

The College believes that the use of animals in research is vital to improve human and animal health and welfare. Animals may only be used in research programmes where their use is shown to be necessary for developing new treatments and making medical advances. Imperial is committed to ensuring that, in cases where this research is deemed essential, all animals in the College's care are treated with full respect, and that all staff involved with this work show due consideration at every level.
