PhD Scholarship in Materials Chemistry at University of Helsinki

The Department of Chemistry (http://www.helsinki.fi/kemia/english/) at the Faculty of Science carries out research on chemistry and its applications at an international level and provides academic teaching based on high quality research. The department forms accountability unit operating on an annual budget of 19 million euros and reports 200 person-years per annum. There are 14 professors at the Department.

Materials Chemistry is an interdisciplinary research program of the Department of Chemistry compiling research on organic, inorganic, polymer and structural chemistry. The research in the department of chemistry covers all aspects from basic chemistry research (synthesis, understanding and characterization) to material applications (utilization in electronics, functional materials and everyday consumables).

The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a

position in Materials Chemistry under the supervision of Prof. Pedro Camargo. The successful applicant will join the Nanomaterials for Plasmonics and Nanocatalysis research group at the Department of Chemistry, and enroll in the Doctoral Programme of Chemistry and Molecular Science (CHEMS-DP) or in the Doctoral Programme in Materials Research and Nanosciences (MATRENA) at the University of Helsinki. The position is fixed-term for 3 years including a trial period of 6 months. Funding for the 4th year will may be pursued from other funding sources. The work is scheduled to commence in September or October, 2019.

Position description

The PhD project is aimed at developing new multimetallic nanoparticles comprising both catalytic and plasmonic metals by wet chemical methods. These plasmonic-catalytic nanoparticles will be employed as plasmonic catalysts to optimize conversion percentages and also achieve control over reaction selectivity in sustainable molecular transformations. In the course of the project, you will develop novel nanocatalysts and study their reactivity. Your work will involve the synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles, characterization of nanomaterials, and evaluation of the catalytic performances with and without light excitation. You are expected to present your findings in scientific meetings and workshops, prepare funding applications for travel and research grants, as well as prepare manuscripts for publication in international scientific journals. Requirements

Motivated candidates with a M.Sc. degree or equivalent in chemistry or other related fields are encouraged to apply. Prior expertise in work in a chemistry laboratory, synthesis, analytical techniques, and other relevant experimental methods are advantageous. Most importantly, you should have a strong motivation for research in a highly multidisciplinary topic, enthusiasm to learn new things and contribute ideas, and possess the ability to conduct your research independently while being an active member of an international research team. Good written and oral communication skills in English will be needed. Salary and benefits

The salary will be in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel, starting level 2). In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 2200-2500 /month.
