Novo Nordisk Foundation PhD Scholarship in Microbial Physiology and Biotechnology

DTU Bioengineering at the Technical University of Denmark invites applications for a position as PhDinMicrobial Physiology & Biotechnology. The position is part of the PhD Program within the Fermentation Based Biomanufacturing Initiative, funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The initiative is a collaboration between the DTU Departments Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering and the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability. This position will be hosted at DTU Bioengineering and is one of four PhD positions posted in this call.

This position will be placed in DepartmentBioengineering, sectionSynthetic Biology,working with the application of genetically encoded, fluorescent metabolite sensors for the evaluation of physiological states inCorynebacterium glutamicum. The project aims at the development of novel approaches to asses strain performances under different, industrial relevant cultivation conditions.

The section has a total staff of approx. 35, of which 7 is faculty.

The purpose of this project is to developa series of novel genetically encoded sensors for the evaluation of intracellular NADPH levels in bacteria. The sensors will be functionally tested and characterized in a set of differentC. glutamicumstrains. Finally, the here developed sensors and strains will be used for process optimization in scale-down bioreactor experiments.

The day-to-day work will be performed in close collaboration with other researchers at DTU Bioengineering and DTU Chemical Engineering. Collaboration includes active participation in national and international meetings and conferences, sharing of data and results, contribution to joint publications.

Candidates should have a master’s degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master’s degree in engineering.

We expect that you are an efficient team worker,have a structured and analytical working approach, good laboratory skills,and good communication skills, and a critical approach to formulation and testing of hypotheses. Also, a good sense of humor will be appreciated.

The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU.
