University Lecturer in World Politics at University of Helsinki

The Faculty of Social Sciences invites applications for the position of

for a fixed term of one and a half years. The starting date of the full-time position is 1 August 2019, ending 31 December 2020.

In addition to the present university lectureship, the discipline of Political Science has six professorships, an assistant professorship and six university lectureships, of which two professorships and three university lectureships focus on world politics. The discipline has more than 50 researchers and doctoral students, and annually awards an average of 50 Master's and five doctoral degrees, of which approximately one-third are completed in world politics.

The duties of the university lecturer will include providing teaching in accordance with the degree requirements, supervising and examining theses and dissertations, and conducting research in the field. According to the University of Helsinki Regulations, holders of university lectureships are required to possess an applicable doctoral degree, to have the ability to provide high quality research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations.

When assessing the qualifications of the applicants, attention is paid to scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, and other teaching merits. In particular, we appreciate excellent command of theories of world politics and academic merits in the areas of either global political economy or peace and conflict studies.

According to the Government Decree on Universities, a university lecturer must be proficient in Finnish. The appointee must also have at least satisfactory spoken and written skills in Swedish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. To successfully attend to the duties of the position, the appointee must have good English skills and be able to teach in English.

The annual gross annual salary for a university lecturer varies between 52,000-79,000, depending on the appointee's qualifications and experience. A six-month trial period will be applied.
