Postdoctoral Researcher Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship position in molecular imaging at University of Helsinki. This fellowship is last for 6 months and posible to extend. Applications are invited up to June 20, 2019.

The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the world's leading universities for multidisciplinary research. The university has an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. The Department of Chemistry (http://www.helsinki.fi/kemia/english/) at the Faculty of Science carries out research on chemistry and its applications at an international level and provides academic teaching based on high quality research. The department forms accountability unit operating on an annual budget of 19 million euros and reports 200 person-years per annum. There are 14 professors at the Department.

Radiopharmaceutical chemistry research is a part of the Research Programme in Molecular Science at the Department of Chemistry. The Tracers in Molecular Imaging (TRIM) research group develops new molecular imaging tools and radiopharmaceuticals for positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) for different biomedical applications including oncology, image-guided drug delivery, neurology, and radiation therapy. In addition, we offer training at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in radiopharmaceutical chemistry.

The Department of Chemistry invites applications for a

position in Radiopharmaceutical Chemistry under the mentorship of Academy Research Fellow, Dr. Mirkka Sarparanta. The successful applicant will join the Tracers in Molecular Imaging (TRIM) research group at the Department of Chemistry. The position will be filled for 15 months with a trial period of 6 months. Possible continuation in the project is negotiable.

Position description

The Academy of Finland -funded postdoctoral project aims to develop PET and multimodal imaging tools for the tracking of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in vivo in the course of cancer immunotherapy. In this project, your task will be to set up the cell and animal models used for the biological evaluation of the targeted imaging probes for tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes including T and NK cells labeled with radioactive isotopes including 18F, 68Ga and 89Zr and fluorescent labels. Your work will involve cell culture, primary lymphocyte isolation, maintenance of transgenic mouse lines, and biological evaluation of the developed tracers in vitro in cell models and in vivo in mouse tumor models with positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, tissue gamma measurements, fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. You are expected to present your findings in scientific meetings and workshops, prepare funding applications for travel and research grants, as well as prepare manuscripts for publication in international scientific journals. Requirements

Motivated candidates with a Ph.D. degree in a relevant field (e.g. radiopharmaceutical sciences, cancer biology, immunology, pharmacy, biochemistry or related) are encouraged to apply. The postdoctoral researcher should have previous experience in mammalian cell culture and demonstrated hands-on skills in in vivo experimental techniques in laboratory rodents. Experience in mouse xenograft and allograft models and in working with radioactivity are especially advantageous for the position. Previous experience in cell-based assays and immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence studies are considered an asset. Furthermore, the candidate should either hold a course certificate for Functions A & D (carrying out procedures and euthanasia of research animals) from a FELASA accredited curriculum, or demonstrate that they hold similar knowledge from their previous training and are willing to enroll in the training once employed to attain regulatory compliance in Finland. Salary and benefits

The salary will be in accordance with the University salary system (for teaching and research personnel, level 5). In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 3300-3700 /month. The University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The International Staff Services office (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/university/working-at-the-university) assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland.

How to apply

Applications should include (1) a CV with a list of publications, (2) contact details for two references, (3) a brief description of research experience (1-2 pages) with clear indication on the motivation to apply for this position, (4) a copy of a PhD degree certificate, and if available (5) course certificate from an animal experimentation course with the description of the course contents. Please submit your application via the University of Helsinki Recruitment System by clicking the Apply for the position button below. Applicants who are employees of the University of Helsinki are requested to leave their application via the SAP HR portal.

The deadline for applications is June 20, 2019.
