Postdoc Position at University of Cambridge

The Department of Radiology with its combination of scientific excellence and access to state-of-the-art imaging facilities is collaborating with seven Cancer Centres in developing novel technologies to apply to the study of Cancer. Cancer Research UK (CRUK) accelerator award have funded a multi-centre translational research programme grant that aims to address the gaps in translation of imaging biomarkers either as tools for clinical trials or to aid clinical decision making. The successful applicant will be working in our exciting human hyperpolarized carbon-13 programme which we have established in Cambridge as well as other multinuclear approaches. The MR techniques to be developed in collaboration with our industry partners at General Electric will include fast imaging techniques such as echo planar imaging and non-Cartesian techniques such as radial and cones. There will also be opportunities to develop image analysis software and mathematical modelling of time-dependent signals. The aim is to use imaging technologies to improve healthcare and draws on Cambridge’s strengths in physics, applied mathematics and engineering, and is an important component of our clinical research programmes.

We are seeking a research associate with practical experience of setting up and performing multi-nuclear MRI studies in humans as well as undertaking quantitative analysis of MRI data.

The main roles of this post are to optimise and acquire multinuclear MRI data from healthy volunteers and standardized phantoms and to analyse MR images from phantom and healthy volunteer studies using a variety of analysis methods in collaboration with the physics team. The main focus will be to develop the techniques for cancer imaging, particularly within the abdomen. The successful candidate will be expected to have excellent computational skills and to integrate with an enthusiastic multidisciplinary group of people with the aim of translating this technique into the clinical arena. Therefore, applicants should hold a Ph.D. and ideally have experience involving the development and application of magnetic resonance methods, ideally with specific experience and expertise in multinuclear MRI. The candidate should have a keen interest in the biological application of associated MR techniques to address clinical questions and possess excellent computing skills (programming in MATLAB and working with UNIX/LINUX and Windows operating systems).
