PhD Scholarship Position in Thermodynamic Sorption Modelling

Information about the research

The field of research for the division Energy and Materials is very broad. The division has a diverse research activity, but we focus on the chemistry of energy producing systems. We contribute to a sustainable society by developing improvements for materials and energy systems applicable in many areas. The Nuclear Chemistry / Industrial Materials Recycling research group comprises 8 senior scientists and 11 PhD students and postdocs. There is one professor in Nuclear Chemistry, and one in Industrial Materials Recycling. The research group is highly international in collaborations and the staff currently represents 9 different nationalities.

The NC/IMR group is specialized in aqueous chemistry and solvent extraction, being used for both recycling of materials and nuclear applications. In the field of nuclear chemistry, there are four major research areas: 1) novel nuclear fuels for the generation IV nuclear power systems, 2) radionuclide release from severe nuclear accidents, 3) partitioning and transmutation of spent fuel, and 4) final repository of radioactive waste. The nuclear chemistry research facilities are unique for an university in Europe, with a dedicated alpha laboratory for nuclear fuel manufacturing and a gamma lab with “hot cell” and irradiation source. In addition, there are several radiochemistry laboratories for trace-level work.

This PhD project is a part of the research for a final repository of radioactive waste, performed by the Nuclear Chemistry group. The intent of the research is to provide data and models that can be used to evaluate the safety of a final repository for spent nuclear fuel. Since the safety is to be maintained for a very long time (10.000 years), the reliablity and consistency of such models and the data they are built on are very important.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to conduct your own research for your doctoral studies and to publish your work in scientific papers. This involves practical and theoretical work together with taking graduate courses. You will also be involved in some minor teaching tasks and other departmental duties, not exceeding 20% of the work. You will investigate the sorption of tracer amounts of the elements Cs, Ni, Ra, Eu, Am and Np on some selected mineral phases that are immersed in, and saturated with, water. It will involve work in inert-gas filled glove-boxes in a radiochemical laboratory and you will learn how to work with radioactive substances. The objectives for the work are 1) to get sorption data for a number of element/mineral/water phase combinations 2) to use established Thermodynamic Sorption Models to model the sorption behaviour, especially with respect to pH and ionic strength 3) to merge the models for the individual minerals with the principle of Component Addition into an overall description of the elemental sorption on a complex solid phase such as rock.

You are expected to develop your own scientific skills and to communicate the results of your research verbally at meetings and in writing reports and articles.

Full time temporary employment. The position is normally 4,3 years.

Qualifications

You must have completed M. Sc. or equivalent in chemistry or chemical engineering and must have proven yourself as an experimental worker in a chemical laboratory. You must have an excellent knowledge in English language to be able to read and write scientific articles. Radiochemistry and/or theoretical chemistry education are merits. Experience of radiochemical laboratory work is a merit. Also, a proficiency in Swedish language is a merit. You have to be self-propelled at work and have a problem-solving attitude. You have to be a careful and disciplined laboratory worker, used to taking notes and logging your results.
