PhD Scholarship Position in Use and Simulation of Aggregate Production for Environmental Product Declarations

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden is inviting applicants to apply for a PhD position in mechanical engineering. This position is available for five years. The deadline to apply is June 07, 2019.

The division of Product Development (PD) consist of three research groups, one being the Machine Element group. The Machine Element group consist of four senior researchers (full professor, associate professor and lecturer (100 % education) and an assistant professor (30% education)). The group has had on average 4-5 PhD student and one research engineer for the past years but plans to expand gradually to 5-6 PhD student in the near future. The Machine Element group is responsible for a number of essential courses at the undergraduate and the graduate level for the Mechanical Engineering program at Chalmers, both at campus Johannerberg and at campus Lindholmen. The group is also involved in a number of additional courses from TD, I and Z program, making the education an extensive part of the work.

The research conduct in the Machine Element group is directed towards machine element, product development and equipment and processes for rock material processing. The group works continuously in improving fundamental understanding and modelling of different machines and processes for the aggregate, mining and minerals industries. For the past 18 years the group has developed its modelling and simulation capability to include combinations of empirical and parametric models based on physical principles. The approach has been adapted by several research groups and is gradually becoming acknowledge as a industry standard. The research group and the planned PhD student will work with further develping these simulation capabilities to improve simulations usability by handling environmental data in order to create environmental declaration or EPD’s for different aggregate products. The objective is to improve process design, configuration and control to achieve leaner processes with higher efficiency and lower environmental footprint.

Project description

The PhD student will work in a project to drive the development a functional demonstrator of a tool, where different stakeholders can log in and obtain relevant information; the customer receives a pre-verified EPD for the produced material, the municipality gets a summary of the environmental impact that will occur in the next month for all quarries in the municipality, the private customer gets a comparison of different producers’ products, including transport, and the site manager at the crushing plant receives a recipe for potentially improved production from both the environmental and productivity point of view. The opportunity for industrial cooperation is very good and potential financiers are found both nationally and internationally. Packaging of the results will also mean new opportunities for product development. The position also includes teaching in the undergraduate courses that the research group is responsible for, including Machine Elements and Product Development.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years.


The successful candidate for this position has a M.Sc. degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in the field of mechanical engineering or related disciplines. The degree should generally not be older than three years. A genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical skills are needed. You should have experience of model development in, e.g., MATLAB Simulink and of organizing and performing simulations. Knowledge in product development, machine elements, engineering design and qualitative research techniques are also a merit. The position requires good verbal and written communication skills in English and documented experience of writing scientific publications. Swedish is a merit.
