PhD Scholarship Position in Science Technology and Society

A fully-funded PhD fellowship in social sciences is available at Chalmers University of Technology. The funding allows successful candidate to work for five years. The deadline to apply is June 09, 2019.

The Department of Technology Management and Economics (TME) broadly researches the interaction between technology development, industrial systems, society, people and the environment. The research can be divided into three main research areas, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Supply Chain & Operations Management and Sustainability & Society Studies. The department is organized in six divisions for research and teaching and one support function and it hosts four research centres and the Chalmers School of Entrepreneurship. Our research is linked to several of Chalmers’ Areas of Advance.

Information about the division and the research

The Department of Technology Management and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology is looking for a PhD candidate in Science, Technology and Society. The position is placed at the Division of Science, Technology and Society, which researches and teaches Environmental Humanities, Ethics of Technology, Gender and Technology, History of Science and Technology, Industrial Dynamics, Policy Studies, Science and Technology Studies, and the Sociology of Technology.

This PhD position is funded by Mistra, as a part of the Mistra Environmental Nanosafety Phase II research programme, which runs for four years, from 2019 through to the end of March 2023. Beyond the natural scientific objective to investigate the toxicity of nanoparticles, the programme will explore new modes of nanosafety governance. Thus, the programme seeks to find ways of facilitating an effective flow and utilization of information between experimentalists, regulators and industry, and of mobilising stakeholders for responsible innovation and risk governance within the field of nanotechnology.

In studying and participating in the above-mentioned research objectives, the PhD project will be make use of ethnographic (alternatively participatory design, or action research) approaches, contributing to programme activities with interventions informed by research fields such as Science and Technology Studies, and the sociology of risk and uncertainty.

Major responsibilities

As a PhD candidate, your main responsibility is to pursue doctoral studies in relation to a specific research aim. At large, PhD studies include a number of doctoral courses, literature reviews, designing research tasks, collecting and analysing empirical data, and communicating the results of your research verbally and in writing, primarily in English. The exact design of your PhD project will be decided in collaboration with the main supervisor.

As a PhD candidate in this project, you will be joining a research team consisting of scholars from the Science, Technology and Society division and the Environmental Systems Analysis division at Chalmers University of Technology, as well as researchers from the Technical University of Denmark. The project will also entail interactions with external stakeholders (experimentalists, regulators and industry) within the nanotechnology field. You are expected to take an active, participative role in this aspect of the research programme.

The position may also include teaching in Chalmers undergraduate level courses, supervising student projects or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.

Full-time temporary employment.The position is limited to a maximum of five years.


To qualify for the PhD candidate post you must have completed a Master’s degree (MA or MSc) at the starting date of 1 September 2019. Applicants may come from the social sciences (preferably sociology or anthropology) with a focus on technology and risk, or from engineering studies (e.g. industrial ecology or industrial engineering and management programmes). Additional qualifications for applicants with a MSc (Science or Engineering) degree are a Master’s thesis on a social scientifically themed topic and experience/interest in working with qualitative social science methods. Prior skills and experiences within the field of nanotechnology is a meritorious, though not mandatory, qualification.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
