PhD Scholarship Non-destructive Assessment of Jelly Seed and Stem End Cavity in 'calypso' Mango and Identifying Additional Control Measures

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in food science at The University of Queensland, Australia. The funds for this position are available for three years. Applicants should apply before June 03, 2019.

The University of Queensland’s School of Agriculture and Food Sciences conducts world-leading research that addresses complex international concerns about food security and sustainable agricultural production.

Internal quality of mango fruit is a key driver of consumer satisfaction and repeat purchase. Physiological flesh disorders, such as jelly seed and flesh breakdown, can significantly affect consumer behaviour. Research-based recommendations are required to assist the production of more resistant fruit and to detect susceptible fruit on the packing line so that they can be selectively marketed.

This PhD will characterise relationships between pre-harvest, harvest and post-harvest conditions and internal disorder expression. Based on reduction and/ or elimination of disorders, it would identify, test, refine and optimise treatment, handling and management practices based on Genotype by Environment by Management interactions.

Applicants will have a First Class Honours degree or equivalent. To be successful, you will require basic expertise and experience in one or more of the following areas: plant biology, plant physiology or plant production systems.

To be eligible to apply, you must also meet the entry requirements for Higher Degrees by Research at UQ.

A domestic part-time student with carer's responsibilities, a medical condition or a disability, which prevents them from studying full time may be eligible for scholarship consideration, on a case by case basis.

The University of Queensland values diversity and inclusion and actively encourages applications from those who bring diversity to the University. Please refer to the University's Diversity and Inclusion website ( ) for further information and points of contact if you require additional support.
