Research Assistant Cruk Ci Genomics Core at University of Cambridge

A new postdoctoral researcher position in molecular biology is available at University of Cambridge. This position is available for 12 months in the first instance. The deadline for applying is April 28, 2019.

Europe’s top cancer charity, Cancer Research UK, has combined with the University of Cambridge to fund the world class Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, situated on the Addenbrooke’s Biomedical Campus in Cambridge.

As part of the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, the Institute’s research ranges from basic cancer biology through translational cancer research to clinical application. The Institute currently houses over 400 researchers and support staff with 20+ research groups and associated core facilities in a state-of-the-art research facility.

The CIGC provides Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS) services to all research groups at CRUK CI as well as the wider University and collaborative partners including The Gurdon Institute, MRC-LMB, The Stem Cell Institute, and many other University Departments.

The role holder will assist in the provision of these services as well as carrying out research support directly, the introduction of new methods and technologies to enhance the quality of research at the Institute and across the University of Cambridge. Daily duties will involve RNA / DNA sample quality control, library preparation using kits from different suppliers, sequencing these samples on Illumina sequencers, data analysis of quality, and interaction with users of the services. The post-holder will be expected to work under their own initiative for most of their daily duties and also to troubleshoot and resolve any issues they encounter. They will be able to work with the relevant technical support teams of instrument suppliers and may escalate issues to a more senior member of the group depending on the severity of the issue. Contribution to teaching within the Institute will include training users on QC equipment in the CIGC.

It is essential the role holder interacts very well as a core member of the CIGC team as well as working independently as required. They will produce project documentation including writing and editing reports, presenting data to the team and generating SOP’s.

The applicant will ideally have a degree in biological sciences and be experienced with a diversity of molecular biology techniques including PCR / qPCR, nucleic acid Library Prep for sequencing. It would be highly desirable for the post-holder to have experience with Illumina next-generation sequencing systems in a practical capacity. They will use their scientific knowledge, expertise and broad practical molecular biology skills to provide a truly excellent sequencing service, as well as helping the CIGC to set and maintain an excellent sequencing service.

This post may require some out of hours working and travel to national seminars/meetings.

Please note, there are two positions available, one open ended and one fixed term for 12 months from the start date.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a security check.
