Postdoctoral Position in Heavy Duty Variable Valves and Alternative Fuels

Applicants are invited to apply for a postdoctoral scholar position in mechanical engineering at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. The department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences (M2) conducts fundamental and applied research in all modes of transport to achieve sustainable technological solutions. M2 holds one of Sweden's most extensive simulator centre for navigation and propulsion of ships, as well as world class laboratories within combustion engineering and wind tunnels. The department also offers and contributes to bachelor and master programs in areas such as Shipping, Automotive and Mechanical Engineering to mention a few. The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a two-year postdoctoral position starting June 1st, 2019, or as agreed. The successful candidate will be offered a two-year employment at Chalmers in the Division of Combustion and Propulsion Systems.

Your research will mainly be experimental: performing single cylinder engine tests and analysis to generate and evaluate a more efficient and cleaner concept.

The division of combustion and propulsion systems is one of seven divisions at the department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences. Our commitment is to generate knowledge and methods that the society needs to be able to develop: highly efficient and ultra-clean internal combustion engines, taking exhaust after-treatment into account, and that use renewable/low carbon fuels and are a part of electrified/hybridized propulsion systems.

Within the Internal combustion engine and propulsion systems unit we have a project designed to investigate the efficiency and emissions potential of a Heavy Duty Engine with a variable valve system operated on conventional Diesel and compared with operation on a renewable gaseous fuel.

Major responsibilities

Your major responsibility will be to pursue the research and development within the project. You are expected to liaise with involved partners and adapt prototype hardware to the test engine and take part in the necessary mechanical work in the lab. You are expected to develop your own scientific ideas and concepts, and to communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. You will be guided by senior researchers at the involved departments and companies. Your major responsibility as postdoc is to perform your own research in the research group. The position could also include opportunities for teaching as well as supervising master’s and/or PhD students to a certain extent. The position is meritorious for future research duties within academia as well as industry/the public sector.

The position is a full-time temporary employment with a competitive salary and with social benefits. This position is limited to two years with current funding.


You should have a Ph.D. in Thermodynamics, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent, completed before the starting date of employment.Experience with experimental engine tests and analysis thereof are considered mandatory. Since the experiments are performed on a heavy-duty single cylinder research engine with a variable valve system and operation on different fuels, knowledge of gas dynamics and 0D gas-exchange programming skills and different combustion concepts are considered especially meriting.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English, as well as an ability to plan and organize the work involved.
