PhD Position on Nanoscale Lasers for Neuromorphic Photonics

Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands is offering PhD position in artificial intelligence. The initial contract for this position is 4 years. Applications will be evaluated on a continuous basis.

Photonics is widely regarded as the key enabling technology of the 21st century and its application and use in many scientific and industrial fields is accelerated though Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs), which combine many optical components into a miniaturized chip format. Similar as electronic ICs, PICs are revolutionizing areas such as healthcare, communication and sensing and have the potential to be disruptive to the whole society.

The same way the internet revolutionized our society, the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI) that can learn without the need of explicit instructions is transforming our life. AI uses brain inspired neural network algorithms powered by computers. However, these central processing units are extremely energy inefficient at implementing these tasks. The European H2020 project ChipAI aims to lay the foundations for nanoscale photonics-enabled neuromorphic technology capable of delivering compact, high-bandwidth and energy efficient optical links by interconnecting neuron-like sources and detectors. In this collaborative project, TUe will work closely with several leading universities, institutes and companies in Europe (including IBM). It will be the task of the PhD student to develop nanoscale semiconductor lasers and demonstrate synaptic optical links. The activities will include device and circuit design, fabrication in the Nanolab@TUe cleanroom and characterization of the devices.

This work will build on previous experience in the field of nanoscale sources and photonic integrated circuits at TU/e. The PhD student will be part of the Photonic Integration group ( of the Electrical Engineering department of Eindhoven University of Technology. This is an internationally oriented group which is leading in researching, developing and utilizing photonic integration with III-V semiconductors to realize cutting edge devices.

Successful candidates should have good writing and documentation skills, excellent analytical and research capabilities and good communication skills. They must be able to organize their own work well and set and pursue their goals independently. The candidate will collaborate not only with the other members of the Photonic Integration group, but also with other researchers in the ChipAI consortium.

We are looking for candidates with a MSc diploma in Electrical Engineering, Physics or Applied Physics, with not more than four years' experience in research after the graduation. The candidate should have a strong background in semiconductor devices (preferably lasers) and general knowledge about semiconductor physics, modelling and component design. Experience with characterization equipment and/or cleanroom work is of advantage.

We offer a challenging job in an ambitious research group through a fixed-term appointment for a period of 4 years. The research is intended to lead to the attainment of a PhD degree. As an employee of the university you will receive a competitive salary as well as excellent employment conditions. The salary starts at 2266,- per month (gross) in the first year, increasing up to 2897,- per month (gross) in the last year. Moreover, an 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year allowance is provided annually. Assistance for finding accommodation is available. Candidates will be selected based on their graduation project and marks, relevant experience and skills, writing skills and publications, work experience and interviews.

Typical recruitment procedure will involve a skype meeting, followed by a face to face interview with a presentation to the group in the second stage.
