Up to Three PhD Positions in Interdisciplinary Mathematics

Uppsala University is delighted to offer a PhD position in applied mathematics. This position is available for four years. Applications are welcome before March 29, 2019.

The Center for Interdisciplinary Mathematics (CIM) at Uppsala University conducts interdisciplinary research between the mathematical sciences and other areas of science and industry. CIM offers training and expertise in mathematical modeling and computer simulation, see http://www.math.uu.se/cim. We are now looking for up to three PhD students to work within the center. These PhD students will join CIM’s graduate school in interdisciplinary mathematics, which started in 2011.

Duties: A PhD student should mainly focus on her/his own graduate education, which comprises four years of study. The position can also include other departmental duties (up to 20%), in which case the position is extended accordingly. The PhD student will work with an interdisciplinary research project, with at least two advisors representing different scientific areas, or one from a company or a research institute and one from academia. One of the advisors should be active within the mathematical sciences, which includes mathematics, statistics, scientific computing, and the more theoretical parts of image analysis, system identification, and automatic control. The area (which must be different from the first) of the second advisor should guarantee the interdisciplinarity of the project. Some examples of relevant areas include physics, chemistry, biology, earth sciences, engineering, economics, finance, medicine and pharmacy.

Requirements:The candidates are expected to have an interest in applied mathematics and/or using models in an interdisciplinary context. A PhD student position requires a Master of Science in a field that is relevant for conducting research in applied mathematics, e.g., mathematics, engineering physics or scientific computing. Candidates with a background in another area of science, e.g. chemistry or biology, with a strong competence and interest in mathematical modeling are also encouraged to apply.

Applications will be evaluated in two stages. First, the intended advisor and their respective departments perform an internal ranking of candidates. Then the most highly ranked applications together with project descriptions from the advisors are evaluated in the second stage.

Deadline: March 29, 2019
