Postdoctoral Researcher/doctoral Student in Sustainable Food Systems

The Future Sustainable Food Systems research group, led by Associate Professor Hanna Tuomisto, is affiliated with the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry and the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science (HELSUS). The recently established growing group is interested in researching potential of novel technologies such as cellular agriculture that utilises cell-culturing technologies for food production. The Future Sustainable Food Systems research group is seeking for

for a temporary 2-3 year contract (depending on the level of the position and starting date) to work in a project called "Assessing the potential of novel food production technologies to improve the environmental sustainability of food systems". The project explores the potential of novel technologies, such as vertical farming and cellular agriculture (i.e. use of cell-culturing technologies for food production), to contribute to the improvement of the sustainability of global food systems. The project will develop new sustainability assessment methods and approaches that consider the wider consequential impacts such as the changes in land use, energy generation and composition of diets that are generally ignored by the commonly used environmental assessment methods.

The postdoctoral researcher/doctoral student will contribute to the development of novel frameworks, approaches and methods for consequential sustainability assessment of food systems and use these methods for assessing the impacts of introducing novel food production technologies in different geographic areas. The appointed researcher will work in collaboration with the other members of the Future Sustainable Food Systems research group and will be supervised by the team leader Assoc. prof. Hanna Tuomisto.

- a degree (a master degree for the doctoral student position, and a doctoral degree for the postdoctoral researcher position) in environmental sciences, engineering, agricultural sciences, environmental economics, or other relevant field

- ability to work independently and as a part of a team - strong quantitative skills and understanding of environmental impacts - knowledge of sustainability assessment methods (e.g. life cycle assessment) is seen as a benefit. A person appointed as a doctoral student is required to apply for the right for doctoral studies from the University of Helsinki within six months after starting the post.

The salary of a postdoctoral researcher will be based on levels 5 and doctoral student on levels 2 – 4 of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research staff in the salary system of Finnish universities. For a postdoc the starting salary will be 3 200 euros/month and for the doctoral student the starting salary will be 2200 – 2400 euros/month, depending on the appointee's qualifications and experience.
