Postdoc Position in Statistical Physics of Colloidal Glasses

A new postdoctoral position in applied mathematics is available at University of Cambridge. This fellowship is last for two years and posible to extend. Applications are invited up to March 08, 2019.

A postdoctoral position is available within the Soft Matter Group in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP), Faculty of Mathematics. This position will be supervised by Prof Mike Cates and/or Dr Rob Jack. The appointee will work on the statistical mechanics of colloidal glasses, focussing initially on hierarchical energy landscapes in relation to both passive and active glasses. This work will build on recent developments in structural glass theory, particularly the role of marginally stable phases and their presence or absence in different physical systems, with which the successful applicant needs to be familiar. Expertise in both analytic and numerical methodologies relevant to the physics of glassy systems is expected.

Duties will include developing and conducting research objectives, proposals and projects. The role holder will be expected to plan and manage his/her own research and administration, with guidance if required, and to prepare proposals and applications to external bodies for funding. He/She must be able to communicate material of a technical nature and be able to build internal and external contacts. He/She may be asked to assist in the supervision of student projects, the development of student research skills, provide instruction or plan/deliver seminars relating to the research area.

Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 1 year in the first instance.

Informal enquiries about the positions may be made to

Applications including a completed form CHRIS/6 Parts 1 and 3 only (downloadable from, a full curriculum vitae, list of publications, a one-page research summary, and the contact details of two academic referees should be sent to: HR Office Manager, Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics, Centre for Mathematical Sciences, Wilberforce Road, Cambridge CB3 0WA, so as to arrive by 8 March 2019. Applicants should ask their referees to send references directly to the HR Office Manager at the above address to arrive by the closing date. Please note that applications sent by email and/or incomplete applications will not be considered. The successful candidate would be expected to start on or around 1 October 2019.
