Postdoc in Surface Structuring Treatment of Textiles

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is the largest department at Chalmers with research ranging from the most fundamental level to a level close to application in industry and society. The Division of Applied Chemistry comprises about 90 researchers, including PhD students, who work on surface chemistry, polymers and catalysis. There are four sub-units: Polymer Technology, Biopolymer Technology, Pharmaceutical Technology and Applied Surface Chemistry. The position announced is placed in the Applied Surface Chemistry sub-unit.

The research carried out at Applied Surface Chemistry focuses on energy, materials design, nanotechnology and catalysis. In recent years, activities related to exploit colloids/polymer interactions, in collaboration with industry, have gained momentum with a focus on materials derived from renewable resources, and on the development of environmentally friendly technology.

The research that will be carried out in this project aims at developing formulations for controlling surface properties of textiles, such as dirt repellency or wetting. To this end, inorganic particles will be formulated with polymers and studied from a colloidal perspective. These formulations will be applied via different processes on the surface of textile to achieve controlled structure formation. This project will be run in close collaboration with industrial partners from the chemical and textile sectors. The position duration is 12 months.

Major responsibilities

The main aim of this postdoctoral project is to ensure the development of methodologies to enable the control of the textile surface morphology at various length scales. This will be achieved by designing formulations to be applied on textile by various methods. One of the underlying aim is to be able to modify the surface properties of textile (wetting, adhesion, etc.). As a post-doc, you will be in charge of the experimental development of formulations and of the evaluation of their performance on model and real systems. In this activity, you are expected to interact with the industrial partners to maximize the implementation of the findings. You are also expected to enable proper dissimination of your findings within the scientific community.

Full-time temporary employment. The position duration is 12 months.


To qualify for this position you must hold a PhD degree in surface and colloid chemistry, physical chemistry or soft matter physics. A PhD in materials science with emphasis on surface and colloid chemistry is also conceivable. In addition, a general knowledge of the techniques related to textile characterization constitutes a strong asset. Skills in oral and written English are mandatory.
