Postdoc in Material Development for Preventive Conservation of Artefacts

A new opening postdoc position in sustainable energy is available at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. This position is available for 6 months. This position is closed on March 17, 2019.

Chemistry and Chemical Engineering is the largest department at Chalmers with research ranging from the most fundamental level to a level close to application in industry and society. The research activities reach from DNA-research and biomaterials to high temperature corrosion, catalysis and recycling. The Department is also heavily committed to teaching at the undergraduate, graduate, as well as postgraduate level in these areas.

Health, natural resources, sustainable energy and materials are some of our lead words and our vision is "Through curiosity and knowledge towards a sustainable world". We have approximately 300 employees, divided into four research and one administrative division. We are situated at campus Johanneberg in the middle of Gothenburg. Information about the research

The Division of Applied Chemistry comprises about 90 researchers, including PhD students, who work on surface chemistry, polymers and catalysis. There are four sub-units: Polymer Technology, Biopolymer Technology, Pharmaceutical Technology and Applied Surface Chemistry. The position announced is placed in the Applied Surface Chemistry sub-unit.

The research carried out at Applied Surface Chemistry focuses on energy, materials design, nanotechnology and catalysis. In recent years, activities related to exploit colloids/polymer interactions, in collaboration with industry, have gained momentum with a focus on materials derived from renewable resources.

This position is supported by the EU Horizon 2020 project APACHE, starting in January 2019. APACHE has the ambition to develop new interdisciplinary solutions to pro-actively prevent art degradation to preserve it for future generations.

Most Cultural Heritage objects housed by museums are often stored under unsuitable climate conditions. APACHE (Active & intelligent PAckaging materials and display cases as a tool for preventive conservation of Cultural HEritage) will develop a cutting edge technology to control and prevent the degradation of such patrimony. The framework will combine advanced sensing and adapted absorbing materials to control the artifacts' environment. In parallel,ad-hoc modelling, to define the threshold of artefacts' degradation and to discriminate between the need for preventive or remedial conservation, will be developped.

Through the outcome of this research, new generation of active and intelligent display cases, crates, and storage boxes, will be implemented.

APACHE includes small, medium, and large museums exhibiting representative variety of display and storage conditions. For instance, the Venice Peggy Guggenheim Collection features one of the most important collections of modern/contemporary art, which experiences highly unfavourable environmental conditions, difficult to control with conventional tools. Centre Pompidou and National Museum of Hungary possess a vast number of artefacts stored in deposits (e.g. in crates and boxes). APACHE has also an industrial dimension, as several industrial partners inside and ouside the business conservation are participating and are key members to ensure the proper implementation of the technologies developped.

Major responsibilities

The main aim of this postdoctoral project is to ensure the development of new tools for the preservation of works of art. As a post-doc, you will play an important in the experimental development of a robust methodology for applying porous material that will then be functionnalized to serve as adsorbent. During the course of the project you will interact with some of the other partners of the EU project APACHE to evaluate your solutions. You are also expexted to enable proper dissimination of your work within the scientific coommunity.

The research that will be carried out in this project aims at developing stable formulation of colloidal precursors of polymer/nanomaterials-based systems for the realization of absorbing coatings. An important aspect will be the re-treatability of the material. Evaluation of the solution properties of such mixtures from a colloidal perspective will be central while the film forming process will also be investigated. The absorbing performance of the treated material will also be assessed.

This project will be run in close collaboration with the company Nouryon in Bohus, Sweden.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to18+6 months.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must hold a PhD degree in surface and colloid chemistry, physical chemistry or soft matter physics. A PhD in cellulose chemistry or in materials science with emphasis on surface and colloid chemistry or cellulose chemistry is also conceivable. In addition, a general knowledge of the techniques related to surface characterization and electron microscopy constitutes a strong asset. Skills in oral and written English are mandatory.
