Postdoc for Magnetocaloric Heat Pumps at Technical University of Denmark

DTU Energy is a partner in a newly formed European consortium aimed at developing renewable energy based solutions for decarbonising the energy used in buildings. A number of flexible solutions will be studied, including heat pumps, solar thermal energy collectors and bore hole thermal energy storage. Specifically the role of DTU Energy is to research an innovative multi-source heat pump with a cascading configuration, which includes both magnetocaloric and conventional vapour compression heat pumps. We are seeking a motivated postdoc to work on the magnetocaloric heat pump, including system development and modelling. The position is available starting 1stMay 2019 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Your tasks will be to optimise the implementation of a magnetocaloric heat pump, which includes cycle analysis and system analysis. This is a complex task bringing together heat and mass transfer, energy analysis, magnetic properties and system design. Magnetocaloric heat pumps are built up of regenerators made from a magnetocaloric material that will heat up in the presence of a magnetic field. An efficient transfer of this heat between the solid material inside the regenerator, the fluid running through it and the heat exchangers of the system is essential for the performance of a magnetocaloric heat pump.

You will also be working on the coupling of the magnetocaloric heat pump into a hybrid cycle with other heat pumps. This will be done both experimentally and by numerical modelling. This will include the interfacing of different numerical models in order to perform as one unit.

An important part of your work is the collaboration with the other academic and industrial partners in the project.
