PhD Scholarship Non-coding Rnas in Cancer at University of Ghent

University of Ghent, Belgium is inviting excellent students to apply for a PhD position in bioinformatics. Applications are invited up to March 31, 2019.

A position is available for a highly motivated PhD student interested in doing research on circular RNAs in the context of cancer. The candidate will join an international and multidisciplinary team consisting of both bioinformatics and wet-lab experts. The group has a strong research track record on cancer genomics and transcriptomics with a specific interest in the role of non-coding RNAs in cancer as biomarkers or therapeutic targets.

Circular RNAs form a fascinating novel class of non-coding RNA, with only a few of them functionally characterized or studied in detail. As circRNAs are stable and abundantly circulating in human blood, they are especially interesting for the discovery of novel cancer biomarkers. The goal of this project is to obtain a set of validated circRNA biomarkers for non-invasive cancer therapy response monitoring and preclinical evidence of novel therapeutic targets.

Recently, a large-scale datamining effort in the lab using comprehensive cancer transcriptome data sets has led to the identification of a substantial set of cancer-specific circRNAs. The research of the candidate will consist in the validation and functional characterization of circRNAs from this set. This will involve both wet-lab and bioinformatics experiments/analyses. However, as the candidate will collaborate in a multidisciplinary team, the focus can be tailored based on the interests and skillset of the candidate.

The Vandesompele lab is part of the Cancer Research Institute Ghent (CRIG) that unites cancer researchers at Ghent University, Ghent University Hospital and VIB-UGent.

Starting date: flexible, as soon as possible
