PhD Scholarship in Biophysics at Stockholm University

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in molecular modeling at Stockholm University, Sweden. The funds for this position are available for four years. Applications are invited up to March 20, 2019.

Project description

Your PhD studies will be in the Biophysics program, specifically within the project:Molecular simulations of ion channels.Project leader: Professor Erik Lindahl,

We seek a highly skilled candidate to join our team with a PhD project focused on molecular modeling and simulation of ion channel membrane proteins. The goal of the project is to understand structure and function in the ligand-gated ion channels that mediate signaling in the nervous system as well as the surrounding membranes with different lipid composition. You will use techniques such as molecular dynamics simulations, Markov state models, bioinformatics, machine learning/AI, and not least perform method development in these areas.

You will join a large cross-disciplinary international team comprising both theoretical and experimental biophysics at Science for Life Laboratory, and the position includes international travel both to our collaborators and conferences.

Successful candidates are expected to have a background in physics, mathematics, chemistry or computer science with excellent academic track record. A very good command of English is essential.

Qualification requirements

In order to meetthe general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed first and second-cycle courses to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

In order to meetthe specific entry requirementsfor acceptance in the Biophysics program, the applicant must have passed courses within the first and second cycles of at least 120 credits in Physics or Chemistry and at the second level, courses of at least 60 credits Biophysics, Biochemistry or Physical Chemistry including a 30 credit Degree Project (thesis).

The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.

The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to successfully complete the program. Important criteria when assessing this capacity are; documented knowledge and skills in the field of the thesis project, written and oral proficiency in English, the capacity for analytical thinking, the ability to collaborate, as well as creativity, initiative, and independence. The assessment will be based on previous experience and grades, the quality of the degree project, references, relevant experience, interviews, and the candidate's written motivation for seeking the position.
