PhD Scholarship 2 in Multidimensional Fiber-optical Communications

Applicants are invited to apply for a PhD position in mathematical analysis at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden. Successful candidate will have funding to work and study for four years in Sweden. Candidates are welcome before March 17, 2019.

The Internet is powered by optical fiber communications, with the world's data flowing through drawn pieces of glass, each slightly thicker than a human hair. While technological advances have enabled six orders of magnitude increase in throughput over the last half century, we are rapidly approaching the so-called capacity crisis, where throughput will flatten out, but demands increase unabated. This project will study the hypothesis to what extent optical fibers still hold large and untapped potential to achieve unprecedented data rates, both theoretically and practically. The crux is considering the available physical dimensions in a joint manner, as opposed to independent. In this project, we will enter this uncharted territory with two ambitious goals: to characterize the full-dimensional capacity of an optical fiber and to develop a spatial-spectral super-channel demonstrator to show significant throughput gains over current systems. Four PhD students and two postdoctoral researchers are recruited. See the joint announcement for all openings in the project.

You will be part of the Fiber-Optic Communications Research Centre (FORCE) at Chalmers, bringing together researchers in communications, photonics, electronics, and networking to solve hard problems in optical communications through a cross-disciplinary approach. The collaboration bridges traditional discipline boundaries and includes the whole chain from components to networks, from analysis to experiments. Collaboration with external partners, both in industry and academia, is also essential.

Chalmers University of Technology is located in Gothenburg on the scenic west coast of Sweden. It is among the top research schools in Europe. The research environment is international and English is the working language.

Major responsibilities

You will participate in research as outlined above and will be developing signal processing methods at the transmitter and receiver to approach the full-dimensional channel capacity. You work will require collaboration with the experimental parts of the work (as you will process experimental data to generate models and validate algorithms) as well as the information theoretic parts (as you will have to compare your methods in terms of information-theoretical metric with the channel capacity). The appointment offers great opportunities to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry as we have numerous ongoing collaborations with the leading groups internationally.

The position as a PhD student is a full-time temporary employment, limited to a maximum of four years, plus teaching and other departmental duties. A monthly salary is paid. There are no tuition fees for PhD studies at Chalmers


The applicant should have a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or similar. Strong experience in signal processing (especially MIMO) is highly advantageous, as are very good programming skills. Excellent presentation skills, and fluency in English are required. High grades in the core courses are required (we generally only accept top 10% of students). Skills in mathematical analysis are essential, particularly transforms, probability, and differential equations. Experience in optical communications is not required, but you should have an interest in applying your skills to optical systems. Previous experiences in research, publications, and teaching are also advantageous.

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in Swedish and English. If Swedish is not your native language, you should be able to teach in Swedish after two years. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
