Two Postdoctoral Positions Electrolyte Development for Next Generation Batteries

Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden is offering postdoctoral scholar position in condensed matter physics. The funding allows successful candidate to work for three years. Eligible candidates should submit the applications before February 15, 2019.

Department of Physics at Chalmers – home of the Graphene Flagship

Stimulated by major needs and challenges in science and a sustainable society, the ambition of the department of Physics is to foster a creative environment for academic research, learning and outreach. We provide a competitive advantage by linking our top-level international and interdisciplinary academic performance in the areas of material science, nanotechnology and energy research with world-leading industrial R&D&I projects.

We address a wide array of experimental, computational, methodological and theoretical challenges, from fundamental physics research, through the development of new materials such as graphene to direct industrial projects generating new inventions. We have a strong learning commitment on all levels from undergraduate to PhD studies where physics meet engineering. We are situated in a stimulating and creative environment with newly renovated facilities. The department is the major part of Gothenburg Physics Centre - a collaboration between five departments at Chalmers and Gothenburg University.

Information about the research project

The research at the division of Condensed Matter Physics is directed towards a fundamental molecular level understanding of structure and dynamics of different disordered materials in relation to macroscopic function. In particular focus are energy related materials and electrolytes for next generation batteries. By creating novel electrolytes and subsequent rational improvement by physico-chemical characterisation and extensive battery testing we hope to enable electrochemical cells with unprecedented performance. The present Postdoctoral positions are funded by a H2020 project and by projects funded by the Swedish Energy Agency and the Swedish Research Council for Environment, Agricultural Sciences and Spatial Planning.

Electrolytes are a diverse and highly complex class of materials needed to enhance the performance for a variety of next generation batteries (NGBs) such as Na, K, Ca, and Al-batteries.

By applying several approaches for outlining novel concepts, initial development, subsequent characterization, and final extensive testing in half, full, and 3-electrode cells the development can be made rational while still maintaining a scientific open-minded spirit. Typically, salt and solvent combinations are to be created (from collaborators or commercial sources), investigated, and subsequently optimized by a number of approaches and techniques at the molecular level.

Two postdocs with ample PhD experience of modern battery and electrolyte research at the molecular level are now needed. The postdocs will share physico-chemical and electrochemical work of more applied character, e.g. develop and test electrolytes within a H2020 project, with more independent and exploratory work, e.g. novel electrolyte concepts. Several NGB technologies are targeted. The postdocs should be able to specify/create the materials needed and handle common electrolyte/battery test protocols.

Major responsibilities

You will be a part of the Division of Condensed Matter Physics at the Department of Physics. The major part of your time will be devoted to your research project, where you will be expected to plan and perform experiments as well as utilize methods for data analysis in a cross-disciplinary environment.

Supervision of BSc, MSc, and PhD students can be a part of the work. The postdocs will also be responsible for some common activities within the research group (today ca. 25 persons).

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of two years (1+1).

Qualifications

You must have a PhD degree in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or equivalent; the degree should generally not be older than three years.

You should have an interest in materials science and energy technology, and very good communication and collaborative skills. Experience of electrolytes, batteries, data analysis, materials and physico-chemical characterization at molecular level, and ex situ, in situ, and operando molecular spectroscopy (Raman, IR) are all advantages.

Excellent oral and written reporting in English to the other members of the projects as well as at international conferences and in scientific journals of high repute is expected.Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
