Postdoc Position at Imperial College London

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Research Associate to work on the CAMELLIA (Community Water Management for a Liveable London) project, which is funded under NERC's Regional Impact of Science in the Environment (RISE) programme, and be part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary and multi-partner team applying NERC funded research to improve London's water management. This is one of two posts which are currently being advertised under this project.

The successful applicant will be required to apply systems thinking and work with other programme partners on developing an innovative Integrated Systems Analysis (ISA) for urban water management, which explicitly focuses on the interactions between the physical, social, management and decision-making system that is created from multiple stakeholder perspectives and with genuine local relevance. This will allow the analysis of differences in short- and long-term effects to avoid unintended consequences. The special focus on stakeholder perception of the system together with their real engagement will help currently separated stakeholders see themselves as part of a locally and more widely connected system in which benefits can be achieved synergistically.

This post will amalgamate social and technical work within the programme and deliver cohesive and proactive water management scenarios and strategies via coupled system dynamics and physically-based modelling. The work will focus the water management and urban planning components of the ISA and explicitly account for land use change impacts and sustainable water management solutions at the London scale. The candidate will work closely with the UCL systems team led by Dr Nicole Zimmermann. The tool will allow the assessment of the feedbacks between water, housing, urban planning, citizens, organisations, institutions and decision-making, and it will include infrastructure performance and urban sprawl on population, supply, demand and socio-economic factors, to overcome a supply-side bias which arises when drivers are assumed to be exogenous to the system. The work will provide robust evidence on policy effects, leverage points, synergies, and ways to prevent unintended consequences.

This is a fixed term appointment for up to 3 years.

*Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant within the salary range 33,380- 35,061 per annum.
