PhD Scholarship Position in Experimental and Theoretical Photonics

A PhD scholarship in nanotechnology is available at Chalmers University of Technology. The funds for this fellowship are available for 3 years. This position is closed on February 15, 2019.

The Department of Microtechnology and Nanoscience focuses on research, innovation and education within the fields of future electronics, photonics, bio- and nanosystems. A close collaboration with Swedish and international partners within academia, industry and society enables scientific excellence and creates an innovative environment. In addition to the 200 researchers and PhD students, MC2 houses a cleanroom for micro- and nanofabrication with the latest equipment.

Information about the project

You will be part of the MSCA-ITN project Microcomb, bringing togetherleading academic and industrial centres working in the area of optical frequency combs in optical microresonators (microcombs). The network combines and shares some of the world leading experience and expertise in photonics in general and in microcombs in particular and is aiming to train a new generation of scientists in this actively developing area bordering physics and photonic engineering and having pronounced applied and fundamental dimensions. Frequency comb research is by itself a Nobel prize winning topic (T. Hnsch and J. Hall, 2005), while the microcombs can qualify as an emerging disruptive technology. Our sub-projects address research and technology problems with interdisciplinary importance from the areas of precision frequency metrology, ultrafast data processing, optical to RF signal conversion, astronomical measurements and soliton physics. Early stage researchers (ESRs) involved into the proposed network will receive broad and well balanced training in device characterisation and fabrication, experimental techniques, theory and modeling in best academic, research and industrial centres and with involvement of the leading experts from across the Globe. A programme of secondments and network wide events will ensure highest levels of cross-country and academia-industry mobility for our researchers. Soft-skills training events organised by such industrial consortium members as IBM, Menlo and AIRBUS will provide our researchers with career perspectives beyond their immediate research focus.

The Photonics laboratory at the Microtechnology and Nanoscience Department (MC2) is a dynamic and creative group with about 30 members working in an international and collaborative atmosphere. We perform both curiosity-driven and applied-research in the areas of optoelectronics, nanophotonics, and fiber optic systems. We enjoy a state-of-the-art laboratory for ultrafast optical science and have access to in-house cleanroom facilities to manufacture our own nanophotonic structures.

The research topic of this position relates to the study of microresonators in advanced coherent communication systems.

Major responsibilities

You will get training in advanced ultrafast laser technology. The work involves numerical modeling and hands-on experiments with laser frequency comb systems and coherent communications. You will have room to develop and contribute with your own ideas. Although most of the work will be carried out at Chalmers, it is expected that you will have a close collaboration with other partners in the network.

Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications

You should have a Master's degree (or equivalent) in Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering or similar. Experience in optics and photonics in general, and in ultrafast lasers (modelocked fiber lasers, frequency combs, etc.), in specific, is a merit. Fluency in English is required.

There are strict eligibility requirements within Marie Skodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks.

At the time of appointment, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account.

Applicants shall also be in the first four years of their research careers at the time of appointment and have not been awarded a doctoral degree. For more eligibility details see http://ec.europa.eu/research/participants/data/ref/h2020/other/guides_for_applicants/h2020-guide-appl-msca-itn_en.pdf

The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
