PhD Position on Anti Fouling Coatings at Technical University of Denmark

EnCoat ApS in cooperation withthe CoaST Research Centre at DTUChemical Engineering seeks a qualified candidate for an industrial PhD position on Anti Fouling Coatings.

EnCoat – a private owned research and development company – has over a span of years being deeply involved in the area of coating and lacquers. EnCoat has a specific and profound knowledge within the areas of technical properties based on formulation and solubility as well as statistical test design. The combination of theoretical evaluation of material properties together with laboratory testing and earlier practical experience gives the possibility to make detailed product evaluations and develop our new concept with encapsulation of biocides for anti-fouling products. The industrial PhD position will include courses and cooperation with the CoaST Research Centre at DTU Chemical Engineering. The activities in CoaST cover coating technologies from raw materials, over formulation, test and characterization to production and application. In the broad perspective, the center will support development, production and use of high performance coatings with improved sustainability profiles over the lifetime of the coating. Areas of research are anticorrosive coatings for steel structures, blade coatings for wind turbines, intumescent coatings for passive fire protection, antifouling coatings for ships, insulation coatings for heat loss reduction, coatings for the cement- and mineral industries, and coatings for oil- and gas pipelines at high temperature and high pressure. The anti-fouling coatings of today contain biocides in high amounts to achieve anti-fouling efficacy resulting in a large amount of biocide basically being released to the environment due to polishing without being solubilized. Therefore, it is of interest to develop products minimizing the amounts of biocides in order to strike the balance between best possible environmental profile and maintaining effectiveness. Encapsulation of biocides and controlled release of biocide is thus a possible technology strategy to achieve an optimized biocide package, which will promote the development of effective fouling control with more environmentally friendly anti fouling products.

In order to maximize the efficiency of the biocides, EnCoat has developed a method based on a new concept with encapsulation of biocides for Anti-Fouling products. This active filler technology is in the process of developing into a fully functional component in yacht coatings. By combining the sol-gel technology with encapsulation of suited biocides, the basic technology for long service life for commercial vessels shall be developed. The goal for this research is to reach filling levels that can ensure 60 months plus anti-fouling efficacy based on research results. The documentation will be combined with real-time exposure on panels in aggressive marine environments in representative waters as well as local exposure.
